Unfortunately, the more attractive a trade fair is and the more innovative its exhibitors are, the greater is the danger of plagiarism and product piracy. IDS - the International Dental Show 2007 in Cologne, the world's largest trade fair for dental medicine and dental technology and the undisputed leading event for the international dental sector, is no exception. It too could become a target for plagiarists' criminal activities. The organizers of IDS - the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI), represented by its Society for the Promotion of the Dental Industry (GFDI), and Koelnmesse GmbH - are doing everything possible to protect the exhibitors at the trade fair. In addition, the exhibitors themselves can do a number of things to protect their product-related rights, both before and during the trade fair. Koelnmesse has prepared a brochure containing some useful tips, which can be downloaded at www.ids-cologne.de (For Exhibitors / Trade fair preparation). Product piracy is the illegal reproduction/imitation of manufactured goods that are protected by commercial trademarks. Trademarks include brands, patents, utility models and registered designs. Attorneys and patent lawyers can advise you on how to acquire these protective trademarks for your own products. Trademark owners should bring along the relevant documentation to the trade fair so that they can prove their ownership of these rights. They should also bring along documentation of any previous cases of trademark violation or any court rulings against imitators. If exhibitors have enough evidence that imitations of their trademarked products will be exhibited at the fair, they can request that these be confiscated by the customs authorities by applying to the Center for the Legal Protection of Commercial Property (Inland Revenue Office Nuremberg). The aforementioned brochure lists the address of the Inland Revenue Office Nuremberg, a selection of legal firms specialising in this area, and other useful contacts. If Koelnmesse GmbH receives concrete tips concerning existing or prospective violations of trademark rights, it writes to the respective exhibitor before the trade fair begins to remind him of the Conditions of Participation and the legal consequences of a violation. Koelnmesse also reserves the right to exclude exhibitors who have already been convicted of product piracy from participating in the next trade fair of the same type. If an exhibitor notices during a trade fair that his trademark protection rights are being violated by another exhibitor, he should first send a warning to this imitator requesting him to sign a formal statement that he will henceforth desist from these activities. If the imitator is not prepared to sign such a statement, the exhibitor should obtain - through a lawyer, as a rule - a temporary restraining order preventing the imitator from continuing to present, advertise and distribute the imitation.
