The digital revolution of the dental world is here

Dentists and dental labs will help themselves to digital methods in practice and the laboratory in the 21st century. Measurements and documentation – extensive quality assurance – networking and speeding up the procedures results in faster, more accurate results, says Dr. Martin Rickert from the Association of German Dental Manufacturers

The trip through the international world of dentists and dental labs during the course of the IDS 2009 is being characterised more and more by the digitalisation of processes. Visitors to the 33rd International Dental Show (March 24-28, 2009) will find out live at numerous booths and through demonstrations that the computer is bringing more and more precision and work simplification into the practice and the lab. Software support means saving time and costs, as well as bringing convenience and quality assurance; hence opening up new possibilities. The interface between dentistry and dental lab work is being redefined in many areas.

Taking a walk through the exhibition halls, the visitor shall see how patients benefit from the further miniaturisation of elements, “invisible” brackets and wires, intelligent ligation methods and new body-friendly materials. Advances and innovations will be introduced, designed to further facilitate processes between orthodontics and adjacent medical areas as well as dentistry. This concerns on the one hand measuring methods, for example functional diagnostics or cephalometric measurement, and on the other, the digital disclosure of data both in- and out-of-house. The IDS visitor will also see how comfortable digital x-ray has become, with its processing and filing options, including link-up with the patient records. Also on view are economical CT and DVT scans, which are worthwhile for small and medium-sized practices. Beyond that, intraoral cameras once again move into focus: they serve as an aid during the patient pre-operative interview as well as for the colour determination for prosthetics treatment, a factor in which the prosthodontist plays an essential role. Just as with x-ray images, photos and videos can be tied to the software and sent via e-mail. Those seeking assistance from the dentist-dental technician team’s stand benefit most from IDS. A joint tour can be organised for example under the heading “Craniomandibular Dysfunction” (CMD) or for such topics as occlusal splint therapy, open-bite malocclusion, microsurgical and prosthetic crown lengthening, treatment possibilities for diastemas and others. For example, specialists attending the fair can find out more about occlusal splint plastics, which are now being offered PMMA-free, or about bio-alloys and colour matched ceramics. Information gain
“Those attending the International Dental Show equipped with specific questions will find that it was well worth the investment,” says Dr. Markus Heibach, President of the VDDI. “Fact of the matter is, you can actually hold the  exhibited products  in your hand and ask the specific company about its business implementation for both practice and laboratory. Practical advancements and innovations make co-operation between the dentist and dental technician and with specialist colleagues more efficient, and patient demands can be more easily met. The dentist and the dental technician increase their standing in terms of image and recognition when it comes to orthodontic rehabilitation and beautiful teeth.” There are many stages and degrees in orthodontics. The general dentist is addressed as is the dentist specialising in orthodontics with advanced training certificates, a Master’s degree and specialist training, as are the laboratory managers and laboratory owners. In addition, adjacent areas such as implantology, parodontology and even radiology and materials science are also incorporated. IDS gives each visitor suggestions for whichever aspect of orthodontics he or she is interested in, including restorative dentistry with its modern procedures. The exhibition also has information about accounting software and accounting for orthodontics services because the dental fee schedule (GOZ) and the standardised price lists for German laboratories (BEL/BEB) will also be a topic for the exhibitors.
IDS takes place in Cologne every two years and is organized by the GFDI Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Dental-Industrie mbH, the commercial enterprise of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI) and staged by Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne.” Note for editors:
