Cologne as dental metropolis: Art, culture and Kölsch round off the 2009 IDS experience

From 24 to 28 March 2009, the international dental world as a whole will look to Cologne for the 33rd Inter, national Dental Show.

But it is not just the trade fair centre that will be on view; the city of Cologne in its entirety will present itself as a modern, international metropolis: Cologne’s countless museums will tempt visitors after the trade fair has closed with extraordinary collections. Music lovers can look forward to classics in the Philharmonie concert hall and in Cologne’s opera house. Many small theatres and cultural outfits add to the programme with varied musical and comedic theatre and exciting live concerts. For those who would prefer to round off their IDS days in 2009 with a cool Kölsch in the evening, numerous attractive locations can be found in Cologne’s old town or in the city’s fashionable districts around Friesenplatz and Rudolfplatz. Cologne’s gastronomy is alluring, with a total of around 4,000 restaurants, pubs and bars, offering treats ranging from Kölsch to caviar. Thus IDS participants will be able to enjoy a varied overall experience in March 2009, in the trade fair city of Cologne.

Picasso or Gaugin, design or church art
Cologne’s varied museums offer a range of high-quality exhibits. The Ludwig Museum, which is famous for its Picasso and Pop Art collections, will be showing special exhibitions by Lucy McKenzie and Maria Lassnig during IDS. In the Wallraff-Richartz Museum, an exhibition with watercolours by Caspar Scheuren will add to the noteworthy collection with works by Dürer, Rubens, Gauguin and other old masters.  Kolumba, the art museum of the archbishopric of Cologne, added to the museum landscape in autumn 2007 with its new building in Cologne city centre, which is certainly worth a look. Art, with works from the Late Antiquity to the present, and architecture work together impressively here in the war ruins of the Late Gothic church of St. Kolumba. Only a stone’s throw away, the Museum für angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Art) is showing a high-quality collection of design since 1900, as well as one of the most significant German collections of European applied art beginning in the Middle Ages.

World-renowned classics in the Philharmonie concert hall
Cologne’s Philharmonie concert hall offers fans of classical music an outstanding programme. On 25 March, the Dresdner Philharmoniker will make a guest appearance and present works by Beethoven, Brahms and Weber. On Thursday, 26 March, Cuarteto Casals will play pieces by Haydn, Bartók and Shostakovitch on the violin (both start at 8.00 p.m.). Cologne’s opera house will begin a new production of Tristan and Isolde just in time for IDS (Friday, 27 March, 6.00 p.m.).

German premiere for Monty Python’s Spamalot.
Following on from its enormous success in New York and London, the hilariously funny musical SPAMALOT by the world-famous British comic group, Monty Python, will come to Germany for the first time. From January 2009, Cologne’s Musical Dome will be showing the hilarious comic spectacle, which was nominated for 14 Tony Awards after its first performance and was awarded “Best Musical” among other things. This highlight in both musical and comedic terms is based on the classic film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Free transport by bus and train.
Your exhibitor ID and IDS admission ticket will entitle you to free travel with all public transport belonging to the Rhein-Sieg transport association (VRS). As well as Cologne, this includes the entire local area, from Leverkusen to Bonn and from Düren to the Bergisches Land. All events mentioned can thus be reached quickly and at no cost.

IDS is held in Cologne every two years and is organized by the GFDI Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Dental-Industrie mbH, the commercial enterprise of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI) and staged by Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne.”
