Dental restoration will be faster and safer in future - namely in the composite section. That makes it even more attractive not least from an economic point of view. The International Dental Show (IDS) will inform its visitors about cutting-edge technologies in Cologne from 20 to 25 September 2021.
The world of composites used to be more complicated. Total etch, self etch, etch-and-rinse, selective enamel etching - different techniques for different indications and there was a special composite and the respective adhesive for each of them. And indeed all of this was justified.
Universal composites for all techniques and bulk-fill composites for the restoration "in one go" without the time-consuming increment technique have greatly simplified the everyday restoration routine in dental practices. However, it goes even further. For example the question "shall I use a flowable or a sculptable composite?" offers scope for innovations.
The reply "it depends on the indication" would be too easy, because actually a flowable composite adapts better to the cavity walls and the base, but is subsequently not as sculptable and vice versa. One option is to coat the bulk filling with a second composite, the application of which one had already considered beforehand for aesthetic reasons.
On the other hand, composites with a controllable viscosity are the alternative for those who want to puristically fill the cavity with one single material. They are introduced in flowable form and subsequently made sculptable. For example, ultra sound devices or thermal regulation can be used to change the viscosity. This saves time and makes the restoration with a composite even more economically attractive.
Does this make classic composites superfluous? Definitely not! To mention just one example: A patient with severely abraded teeth visits the practice. The treatment agreed is a definitive bite elevation. This requires the complete build-up of the occlusal surfaces of several posterior teeth. In such complex situations, the choice might well fall on a classic composite.
At the same time, new products are enhancing the options of dental restoration. The new materials are similar to the composites but are processed in a slightly different way. They can be used as teeth-coloured restorations without having to be etched, bonded or conditioned in a different way.
In general, this makes the coloration process easier. With five shades plus a chameleon effect, practically all natural tooth colours can be reproduced. Furthermore, a much more extensive assortment is available to ensure the highest aesthetic result.
Hereafter, the equipment needed for dental restorations includes a range of tools. These comprise of most recently polymerisation lamps, which have a secure polymerising effect and furthermore also provide diagnostic support in detecting tooth decay. Matrix systems for the simpler creation of contact points form a further focus. Hence, beyond the composite itself it is also worth taking a look at the fastening materials and tools - finally also at therapy alternatives in the respective clinical situation for example compomers or glass ionomer cements.
"I am anticipating a host of product innovations at IDS 2021," commented Mark Stephen Pace, Chairman of the Association of the German Dental Manufacturers e.V. (VDDI). "Because dental restoration makes up a large proportion of the daily work in the dental practices. This is why even small progress in this section has a wide-ranging leverage effect. The visitors will be able to experience this at IDS 2021. A professional hygiene concept drawn up in compliance with the provisions of the Corona protective regulation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and in close coordination with the authorities in Cologne under the name #B-SAFE4BUSINESS is the prerequisite for this. The jointly developed measures interlock seamlessly and will govern the interaction among all people present at the trade fair. This is for me personally an important and in its stability reassuring basis for a successful International Dental Show in Cologne from 22 to 25 September 2021 and will enable the visitors to concentrate completely on the dental innovations in the dental restoration and many other areas while moving through the exhibition halls."
IDS takes place in Cologne every two years and is organised by the GFDI Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Dental-Industrie mbH, the commercial enterprise of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI). It is staged by the Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne.
