International Dental Show (IDS) 2007 in Cologne

Over 1,700 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, occupying 130,000 m² - 62 per cent from abroad. Higher visitor turnout expected - IDS new products database online.

Speaking today with business journalists covering IDS, Dr. Markus Heibach, President of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI), and Oliver P. Kuhrt, Executive Vice President of Koelnmesse, described the International Dental Show as an "impressive success story." The 32nd IDS will be held in Cologne from 20th to 24th March 2007. The world's largest trade fair for dental medicine and dental technology is to occupy Halls 3.2, 4, 10 and 11, and this year's fair will be the most comprehensive and attractive IDS ever held, said Dr. Heibach. "For decision-makers from dental practices, dental labs, the dental industry and the specialist dental trade, IDS is the international dental world's undisputed leading fair," he stated. And thanks to the extensive construction and modernisation measures at the Cologne exhibition centre, added Kuhrt, the 1,700-plus companies from over 50 countries exhibiting on 130,000 m² of gross exhibition space can expect unprecedented high levels of quality in terms of their presentations, their stay and the services offered. In 1992, Koelnmesse joined in a partnership with the VDDI/GFDI - Society for the Promotion of the Dental Industry to organise the dental show, which was first held in1923 in Berlin. The partners' combined efforts have taken the IDS to new heights: The event's gross exhibition space is nearly three times larger, and there are more than twice as many exhibitors as in the years before the alliance. The fair, which is held every two years, attracted about 50,000 visitors in 1992, rising to more than 77,000 visitors from 165 countries in 2005. According to Dr. Heibach: "IDS is a magnet for the entire dental world." Kuhrt is confident that the 2007 International Dental Show will set a new record for the number of visitors, and he explained that the product range on show has made further strides forwards. "Thanks to Koelnmesse's extensive network of subsidiaries and foreign representatives, we have again stepped up our activities for attracting visitors to IDS," he said. "What's more, we are offering many new services that make it easy and efficient for exhibitors and visitors to plan their visits." Germany's dental sector on course for growth
In 2006 the VDDI's member companies' combined turnover was almost €3.5 billion, which corresponds to an impressive growth rate of nearly nine per cent. Of this total turnover, almost €2 billion was generated abroad, an increase of more than ten per cent. Domestic turnover was slightly under €1.6 billion, up 7.1 per cent. "These results clearly show that in 2006 our industry again succeeded in maintaining, and even building upon, its export strengths," said Dr. Heibach. "Our crucial home market here in Germany is as important as ever, despite the export boom. In fact, following the decline in 2005, which was attributable to the government's health care reforms, it recovered last year. The outlook for the domestic dental business in 2007 is by and large very positive. Two-thirds of the member companies that we surveyed are forecasting further increases in their turnover, and 31 per cent expect their domestic turnovers to be on a par with last year's results." Germany and the USA are most strongly represented
About 1,080 of the IDS suppliers are from abroad this year, which amounts to 62 per cent of the total number of exhibitors. Approximately 660 German companies will be exhibiting. The largest contingents of foreign exhibitors are from the USA (186 companies), Italy (177), Switzerland (69), the Republic of Korea (66) and the UK (48). Also well-represented are France, the Netherlands, Sweden and Brazil. Companies from New Zealand, Norway, Egypt, Andorra and San Marino will be exhibiting for the first time. There are almost 20 group presentations, with the largest coming from the USA, Korea and Italy. Taking part for the first time are groups from France, Bulgaria, the UK, Hungary, Taiwan and China. More than 250 new exhibitors - larger stands
A total of 92,000m² occupied by IDS 2003, 107,000 m² by the 2005 trade fair, and 130,000 m² in 2007 - this impressive track record of three consecutive increases in the gross exhibition space is only partly explained by the fact that the fair will feature more than 250 new exhibitors this year. IDS is also bigger because many returning exhibitors have larger stands than in the past, giving them more space for communicating and providing information. Following the inclusion of Hall 4.1 in 2005 alongside the existing IDS Halls 10 and 11, the tremendous interest in the fair this year has led to the addition of another two hall areas: 3.2 and 4.2. The world's leading dental trade fair will therefore fill the entire Hall 4. New: Entrance South, Boulevard and Piazza - Ease of orientation
The entire Cologne exhibition centre has been modernised, including extensive new construction. The Boulevard, which was completed in January 2007, ensures that all the halls are close at hand and offers optimal guidance for visitors. It is also a hub for services and recreation that starts at the new Entrance South, which is the gateway to central Cologne - and to destinations around the world, as it's only metres away from the Köln Messe / Deutz railway station. In addition to the Entrance South, the familiar IDS Entrances East and West have both been rebuilt and renovated. A new Piazza in the middle of the otherwise glass-enclosed Boulevard serves as a hub linking all points- and a great place to meet outdoors. Dealers' Day & Lounge, Speakers' Corner and much more
The Speakers' Corner will be located in Hall 4.1, conveniently close to the Entrance West, following its successful premiere at the 2005 fair. On each day of the fair, IDS exhibitors will be presenting new products and processes here (the programme is available online, at www.ids-cologne.de: click on "Visitors" and "Supporting programme"). IDS 2007 will also feature an Importers' und Dealers' Lounge designed to serve the needs of trade dealers from Germany and abroad. The lounge is located in the Offenbachsaal (Passage 10/11). The proven policy of keeping the first day of the fair (20th March 2007) open exclusively to the dental trade and importers will be continued. This "Dealers' Day" offers participants the opportunity to conduct in-depth sales negotiations without distractions. Attractive supporting programme by and for dentists and dental technicians
The Association of German Dental Technicians' Guilds (VDZI) and the German Dental Association (BZÄK) are rounding out the exhibitors' wide array of products and services at IDS 2007 with an informative, attractive supporting programme. The traditional dentechnica forum takes place on 23rd March. On the same day, the VDZI and the FEPPD (International Federation of Dental Laboratory Owners) will be staging the International Dental Technicians' Forum. What's more, the VDZI will once again be using the fair as a platform for the highly-skilled next generation of dental technicians. On 22nd March at IDS, the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals for the 11th Gysi Prize competition for trainees in this field will be presented. The prize-winning works will be exhibited on the intermediate level between Halls 10 and 11. As in previous years, VDZI representatives will be on hand at the association's stand in Hall 11.2 to talk to participants and answer questions on business aspects, invoicing and issues affecting the profession. The German Dental Association (BZÄK) will again be represented at IDS, along with the Association of Dentists in the Statutory Health Insurance System, the German Society for Dentistry, Oral Hygiene and Orthodontology, the Institute of German Dentists, the trade magazine Zahnärztliche Mitteilungen, and the German dentists' foundation that provides emergency aid and treatment for leprosy sufferers. In addition to trade-specific presentations, the stand in Hall 11.2 will provide dentists with information on all participating partner organisations and - last but not least - a great opportunity to meet colleagues. Hundreds of new products at www.ids-cologne.de (for the press)
IDS will be presenting a wealth of new products, trends, innovative products and methods. These new developments will be the focus of not only the Speakers' Corner, but also of dozens of company press conferences, which will be held almost hourly on the day before the fair opens (19th March) and throughout IDS. The VDDI and Koelnmesse have collaborated to develop a research tool for journalists - an online database of new products (www.ids-cologne.de / "Press"), where hundreds of companies present hundreds of IDS new products, including photos and brief descriptions. The range of products at IDS covers the furnishing and operation of dental technology labs, doctors' offices and practices, as well as all products for dental treatment and tooth replacement. The fair is particularly focused on dentistry and dental technology, preventing infection, maintenance, services, information systems, communication and organisational systems. The International Dental Show (IDS), which takes place in Cologne every two years, is organized by the Association of German Dental Manufacturers, Cologne (http://www.vddi.dee), represented by its Society for the Promotion of the Dental Industry (GFDI). The trade fair is staged by Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne. Note for editorial offices:
