Latest trends in practice hygiene: efficient, safe and convenient

Implementation of the Infection Protection Act and recommendations by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) – Quality assurance and management key issues at IDS 2009

Professional hygiene management has been highly significant to dental practices for many years. To ensure traditionally high levels of hygiene over the long term, Germany has established formal standards that are becoming increasingly important in dentists’ day-to-day work. In particular, the updated recommendations by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) are considered a suitable basis for the introduction of new structures to the team’s daily work. Effective hand and patient hygiene, the safe sterilisation of medical products, the efficient cleaning and disinfection of materials, surfaces, practice laundry – all this requires appropriate quality management. In addition to this is the documented implementation of practice hygiene plans that comply with official requirements and inspections. Dentists and practice staff can find out much more about the current state of practice hygiene issues and consult with qualified manufacturers at the International Dental Show (IDS) from 24 to 28 March 2009 in Cologne. Current legislation and standards to prevent infection are of particular concern to dentists in private practice in their capacity as business operators and employers. These make clear demands on practice hygiene. For example, the German Act on Medical Devices and secondary regulations require that infection risks stemming from dental instruments be assessed differently. The classification into different risk groups then defines specific prevention measures in effectively protecting patients, staff and practitioners from infections. Consistent hygiene management in dental practices is supported above all by specialist companies in the dental industry who will present their latest products and services at the International Dental Show from 24 to 28 March 2009 in Cologne. It will give dentists and their staff the unique opportunity to gain a complete overview of hand, instrument and surface disinfection, as well as disinfection of special areas such as suction systems and complex treatment units. The latest components and technologies make it possible to effectively and safely execute hygiene measures, increasingly without interrupting the normal workflow. The IDS will also showcase the latest process documentation systems for quality assurance, which allow daily testing routines to be digitally documented automatically and can save the practice substantial expenditure in both time and liability risks. The integration of such systems into current practice management and patient administration software is a further highlight of the dental trade fair, which is a unique international forum for specialised visitors to get knowledgeable answers on all aspects of current practice hygiene. With this information, they can also establish their own hygiene measures in the future in accordance with legislation. “The International Dental Show, the world’s largest fair for dental medicine and dentistry in Cologne from 24 to 28 March 2009, gives specialist visitors from practices and laboratories an ideal opportunity to gain comprehensive information about the entire spectrum of modern hygiene concepts and current trends in infection prevention by talking with specialists from exhibiting firms as well as experienced users,” says Dr. Markus Heibach, President of the GFDI and the VDDI.
IDS takes place in Cologne every two years and is organized by the GFDI Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Dental-Industrie mbH, the commercial enterprise of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI) and staged by Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne.” Note for editors: See under “Photos” in the “For the press” section for images on past IDS shows (http://www.ids-cologne.de).
